She was quick, made sure we understood everything and kept her price low. We compared her to other interior designers and she was by far the best choice. I cant wait to work with her again. When starting your window treatment search, you need to consider your preferences for style, light blocking ability, and privacy. Blinds and shutters can be adjusted to allow varying levels of light and privacy in your home on a day-to-day basis, whereas once you install shades and curtains, the amount of light and privacy can only be adjusted by opening and closing them.

Read on to see some of the major differences in window treatment options for your custom home. Blinds offer the ability to raise or lower and to adjust the angle of the slats to let light in or keep it out. Horizontal or vertical slats are a defining difference in blind types. Some blinds even offer a sheer fabric overlay for extra privacy when the slats are opened. There are many styles and types of blinds to choose from. Materials used for blinds vary, but all blinds are made out of hard material – aluminum and vinyl being the cheapest style – while wood and faux-wood tend to be on the more expensive side. Shades are similar to blinds because they go up and down, but they do not have slat openings. Shades are made of single piece of soft material like fabric, vinyl, or grasses. They can be basic or very stylish, as they come in many styles, colors, fabrics, and textures. Different styles of shades can allow varying levels of light in, from light filtering shade options to blackout shades.

Typically the most expensive option, shutters have been known to add value to a home. Shutters are made of solid construction, usually wood, with vertical slats and horizontal rails. They normally hinge on one or both sides to allow full access to the windows. Different styles of shutters include traditional and plantation. Traditional shutters, also known as colonial shutters, have shorter and narrower slats. They were originally used in the northeast as they are more effective in sealing out the cold. Plantation shutters, also known as California shutters, have wider and longer slats. They were originally made to protect from heat and allow better air flow in homes in California and the surrounding region. Today, the choice between the two is based on your style preference, plantation shutters being the most popular in homes with modern architecture and décor. Curtains and drapes are a great way to add style and color to your home. The choices are endless with colors, fabrics, textures, and even the placement around your windows.
