From Missionary Mommas - I know over past 4 years, there has been a buzz in the LDS culture about the Amish in Ohio that joined our church. They have been mentioned in church articles and I believe in General Conference. I happen to be really good friends all three families. They truly have an amazing conversion story! From the community payphone calls where the Elders HAD to use their first name to identify themselves to the secret 2am missionary discussions in a barn to t...he shunning and losing family, friends, jobs, land.... their testimony is truly an inspiration to all especially to me. They have all struggled financially since the shunning. Shunning is the worst form of punishment in the Amish community. When you shun a person, you have no contact at all with the shunned. If you know that the shunned made a piece of furniture, you can not physically touch that furniture let alone purchase it. Here one example, one family had a log that needed to be taken to the local sawmill. The husband couldn't take it to the sawmill because the sawmill owner was a local Amish that knew of the shunning - the owner refused to purchase the log.

The husband called us & asked if we could take the log in which of course we did. The sawmill owner took the log, paid us for the log, & then we in turn gave the money back to our friend. Had the sawmill owner known where the log came from, there would have been no money exchanged. The same process would have to be followed if they wanted to purchase fruit at a local Amish market. In the early days of the shunning, transportation for all 3 families was still horse & buggy. Can you imagine riding your horse & buggy around just to find a shop that would take your money?! Don't worry... the church stepped in and no one went hungry! My point is their lives were turned upside down - parents refusing to talk to their adult children, teenage children refusing to talk to their parents. It's been almost 5 years now and it's a very slow road back to establishing relationships and businesses. If you are interested, one family has started to publicly share their story. After all, renting would cost about $300, and would be much better in helping us meet our debt-free-wedding goals.

I was pretty discouraged at that point because finding a gown to fit and make me feel like a princess instead of a giant marshmallow was proving to be a difficult task. The place is very small, and you get a very personal feel... like you are shopping in your sister's closet. She pulled a couple of gowns in my size, and I saw one that was slightly smaller that I really liked. I wanted lace, and this one was lace... The minute I put that gown on, I knew I had found the right dress. It had a zipper back, and it just wouldn't zip. And I wanted elbow-length sleeves. To make it fit, we would need to put in a corset back and do some alterations to the shape. They would put lace down to the elbow for my elbow length sleeves. But I had to purchase the dress in order for them to make such drastic alterations. In the end, I purchased the dress for $600, had them make the alterations, and was happy with the end result. Stylistically, I would have done a few things differently to the corset back, and instead of satin, I should have asked for something that would match the lace better and not be quite so glaringly white.

But my veil covered the back so it wasn't an issue. Overall, I am very happy with my choice to go with Modest Gown Rental, and I would recommend them to anyone.
