In addition, she is a freelance writer for numerous publications. I'd flirted with used furniture for a long time — a bookcase here, a side table there. But it wasn't until I laid eyes on my dining room set — old, sturdy, priced super, super well — that I actually fell in love with the idea of used furniture.
I've spent years since then, trolling stores and estate sales for pieces that have a history to them, and a look that I won't find in everyone else's home. Plus, have I mentioned the prices? So feeling the itch for something new to me, I set out recently on a series of excursions to used furniture stores. There are more of them now. They are the fastest growing segment of the resale world. Used Furniture Stores London Ky"There's no question that (interest) is increasing. Indoor Motion Detector LightsThere are just way more stores than there used to be,'' says Adele Meyer, executive director of the Association of Resale Professionals, a national trade association based in St. Clair Shores. Car Paint Crack Repair CostShe estimates that 20% of her group's 1,100 members represent furniture resale stores, which is up from 10% about a decade ago.
And here's why it has grown:Many of us have been chastened by the recession; we're more careful with our money. “I think people are getting smart,'' says Robert Lebow, manager at Redesign Home Consignment in Royal Oak. "People realize that in consignment furniture they get tremendous value. People shop consignment because you can get quality at an incredible price.”Mid-Century Modern furnishings are so popular and the place to find the real stuff — not reproductions — is at resale stores. And on top of that, we've become a DIY culture; the idea of refinishing or upcycling something isn't intimidating to many of us. So with all that in mind, I've decided to share three furniture consignment stores. They're all well-organized and clean — which is to say you won't feel the need to take a shower when you leave them; that's not always the case when you're shopping resale furniture. And because the interest in resale furniture is so big, I'll continue going to them and report back to you.
or 248-439-6040Redesign Home might just be the Holy Grail of high-end furniture resale stores, with designer pieces consigned from the homes of Oakland County's ultra-stylish. Most recently, that meant furnishings by Henredon,   Baker   and Hans Wegner,   a darling of Mid-Century Danish design. A Wegner dining table that extends to 12 feet and comes with six chairs is $11,500. A 12-foot Mid-Century credenza designed by Cranbrook graduate and architect Florence Knoll is $8,050; it was custom-made for a home in Bloomfield Hills. A silver plate compote was $5; decorative accessories usually start in the $10 range. The store also sells artwork by Michigan artists. The offerings are in impeccable condition — nothing is in need of reupholstering, painting or any other fixes. It's clean — inspected with an ultraviolet light — and ready for your home. Lebow, the store manager, says he rejects 90% of the pieces he sees from potential consignors. "We want to make sure our customers and clients are not disappointed when they come in and they are not inundated with schlock."
The quality and condition and the great prices — furniture here isn't cheap, but it's far less expensive  than you'd pay if you could find it new — mean things go fast. Plus, five-year-old store sells merchandise through its website."The turnover is so quick, things sell the day they come off the truck," says Liz Adelman, the store's assistant manager.  "Art Deco and Art Nouveau have become very popular. The best prices in the whole store, however, are probably on the dishes and glassware and table accents — five etched wine glasses for $12, a Baldwin Brass candlestick for $4.80 and a brass candelabra for $40. A wrought iron frog-shaped candle holder from Restoration Hardware (part of the tag was still attached) was $14. Merchandise gets discounted 20% after a month, though most doesn't stick around that long.
