Using the same flooring in your dining room and living room creates a seamless, open look for your home. If your living room and dining room are open to one another, choosing flooring for the two rooms can be a challenge. You want to create two visually distinct spaces, but you want the rooms to flow into one another seamlessly, too. When combining living room and dining room flooring, look for a common element, however small, between the two rooms and you'll wind up with a unified look, even if you use two completely different flooring materials. Use the Same Flooring The easiest way to combine flooring in a living room and dining room is to use the same material for both spaces. It's a particularly effective option in a smaller space because using two types of flooring can cut up the room and make it feel even smaller. Hardwood flooring works well in both spaces for a traditional look. If you're on a budget, though, laminate flooring that resembles wood is an attractive alternative. For a softer flooring option, wall-to-wall carpeting can work in your living room and dining room, too.

Opt for a stain-resistant fiber, though, in case of food or beverage spills. Wool, olefin and polyester are all good options. If you're worried about there not being enough distinction between your living room and dining room with the same flooring, visually separate the space by using area rugs to break up the continuous floor. Choose Similar Shades In a larger space, using different flooring materials in your living room and dining room can add dimension and character to an open floor plan. But if you're concerned that two materials will make the space appear too busy, choose options that are similar in color to create a look that unifies the space while providing different textures. For example, if you're using tan stone tile in the dining room, choose carpeting in a taupe or tan shade for the living room. For a warm, elegant look, pair dark, rich wood flooring in the dining room with a chocolate or wine-colored carpet. The similar tones will unite the two rooms and give the space a balanced look.

Go for Contrast In some cases, you are better off choosing contrasting flooring materials for your living room and dining room if you want to create a striking look. It’s a particularly good option if you’re using different types of wood in each room since using similar species or finishes may look like you’ve tried unsuccessfully to match them. However, pairing light blond wood flooring in the living room with a rich, almost black stained wood in the dining room creates a bold contrast that distinguishes the two rooms and makes a dramatic statement for the space. Create Continuity with Rugs If you already have different flooring in your living room and dining room and the two rooms have a mismatched look, you can unify the spaces without tearing out your flooring and replacing it. Instead, use area rugs to create a sense of continuity between the two rooms. For the greatest visual continuity, use the same rugs in the center of both floors to tie them together. If you don't want to match exactly, choose two rugs in similar shades or patterns.

You can also use an area rug in one room to match the flooring in another. For example, if you have wood flooring in your living room and gray stone tile in the dining room, opt for a dove gray or charcoal area rug for the living room so it flows easily into the dining room.
