A typical system consists of a grate connected to a riser pipe that, in turn, connects to a horizontal drain pipe that penetrates the garage wall; the grate sits flush with the garage floor, and the riser and drain pipe are buried beneath the slab. Drain grates are available in a range of sizes to accommodate your anticipated volume of run-off water, and the best size and number of grates to install will depend on how wet your garage is. Trench Drains A trench drain, or channel drain, consists of a horizontal channel covered by a grate perforated along the entire length of the channel. Trench drains can handle a larger volume of water at one time than a conventional drain, and they are often used to drain both garage floors and driveways. A trench drain installed across the driveway just outside the garage door, where the driveway slopes toward the garage and the garage floor slopes from the back of the building toward the door, will accept runoff from both the garage and the driveway.

Installing this kind of drain after you build the garage involves cutting through the concrete slab, digging the trench, installing the drain channel and pouring new concrete to refinish the slab. Building Codes and Regulations Garage floor drains are likely subject to local building and plumbing codes, so consult your local building authority before you attempt to install one. In some localities, garage floor drains are prohibited because of the possibility of hazardous materials infiltrating ground water when channeled from your garage into the surrounding soil.
