If this is your first pet, we require a home visit. Our contract states that all dogs must receive regular vet care, including heartworm preventative, and obedience training. You must be 21 years old to adopt, and we prefer those who own a home, although very mature and responsible prospective adoptees who rent will be gratefully considered. Any dog that does not work out is returned to us by legal contract, after you have taken reasonable measures to give the dog a chance to adapt to your home and new situation. You may have to wait up to two weeks for us to find a spot for the returning dog, as we are always very full. Thousands of cats and dogs will be available for free adoption May 31 and June 1 from more than 80 New York City area rescue groups and shelters including Pet Lovers United Together as One (P.L.U.T.O.) Rescue, Louie's Legacy and Staten Island Hope Rescue on Staten Island.
The latter group will also be among the many participants at two large, outdoor adoption events in Union Square, Manhattan. Saturday: May 31 Free dog and cat adoptions: Meet dogs and cats in the care of Pet Lovers United Together as One (P.L.U.T.O.) Rescue of Richmond County, at Petco in Charleston Shopping Center, 2752 Veterans Rd. West, noon to 3 p.m. All adoptions Saturday and Sunday will be free of charge as part of Maddie's Pet Adoption Days. Free kitten, cat and dog adoptions: Meet animals in the care of Louie's Legacy at Petsmart, 1520 Forest Ave., Port Richmond, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free cat and kitten adoptions: Meet animals in the care of Staten Island Hope Rescue at Petco at 2795 Richmond Ave., New Springville, noon to 4 p.m. All adoptions are free to June 10. All adoptions will be free of charge as part of Maddie's Pet Adoption Days. Cat and kitten adoptions: Members of the Staten Island Council for Animal Welfare will be in the cat adoption room at Petsmart, 1520 Forest Ave., Port Richmond, Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. to help visitors get to know the cats available for adoption. Free kitten, cat and dog adoptions: Meet animals in the care of Louie's Legacy at Petco in Charleston Shopping Center, 2752 Veterans Rd. West, noon to 4 p.m. Dog adoptions: Dogs in the care of the Staten Island Council for Animal Welfare may be seen at Country Estate Kennels, 4838 Arthur Kill Rd., Charleston, 10 a.m. to noon.
