Poly shutters and blinds have come so far and there are so many options now. I have all wood in my current home - both plantation shutters and blinds. There is a difference in the look of poly and wood and some people (especially designers) can certainly see that difference quickly. However, I would venture to say most people would not notice. My wood blinds/shutters are also very easy to maintain. A feather duster or a cloth with light water is all that is needed - kinda the same with my poly. I have wood plantation shutters over a large room in my master bathroom which is located directly over my tub and close to the steam shower and the wood has never warped and the paint has not peeled - it looks the same as the day it was installed 6 years ago. I would go with whatever product suits your style, likes, and budget. Both are great and easy to maintain. 5,286 posts, read 14,859,778 times Originally Posted by stayinformed40 I'm not talking about inexpensive poly/vinyl blinds or shutters that you buy at Lowes - I'm talking about the custom Polywood (name brand) plantation shutters that cost an arm and a leg for each window.
If you buy the smooth white finish on the Polywood (versus the wood grain), they are indeed indistinguishable from smooth white wood shutters. You may put wood plantation shutters in a bathroom but that doesn't mean that the warranty will cover them should warping occur. I know for a fact that some shutter companies will not guarantee against warping if their wood shutters are installed in bathrooms. Polywood has a lifetime warranty against warping. That is what I am talking about - the custom poly shutters and blinds. I usually use one of 2 custom blind companies that I have a personal relationship with. I am not familiar with the ones at Lowes, so I can't speak of those. If you are using a good, reputable company, you should have a warranty on all of your products - I would not use a company whom did not offer this given the price of the products. I can tell a difference, but it is minor and as I said earlier, not everyone will be able to do so. There are pro's and con's for both products equally.
Have you extensivley used wood and poly? I feel I have used both equally and could recommend either depending on the needs of my client. 1 posts, read 10,621 times 44 posts, read 185,219 times Originally Posted by yocena There is a difference between "poly" shutters as you call them and Polywood Shutters (name brand product). First, there is basically nothing much to repair - unless a train comes through your house, Polywood shutters are built and installed by experts with lifetime warranties. In all the years I had Polywood Shutters, I had no repairs and no service calls. The are every bit as expensive as wooden shutters and they can easily be painted if need be (spray painted). The real wood shutter people always say disparaging things about any shutter made from plastic - that has never changed. 8,072 posts, read 8,312,533 timesWe had Vinylclad shutters put into our old house on every window and they looked great, were easy to clean, had one repair in 18 years, and really did block out western sun effectively.
