Well, then it’s time to take your design shopping to the next level! There are lots of small design boutiques run by young designers, several lovely vintage stores and intriguing combinations of shop/gallery/cafes with a focus on design, for you to add on your list of places to visit! That said, I’ve made a small roundup of some of my favorite design stores in the city right now! Kauniste is known for its colorful printed textile products, and their selection covers a wide range of home textiles, designed and handprinted in Helsinki. My favorites are the lovely tea towels inspired by Finnish kitchen linens from the 60s and 70s, which also make perfect gifts and souvenirs! Other products include for e. cushion covers, trays, and bags, and you can also buy fabrics by the meter. In addition to the textile products, they have a selection of traditional Finnish homewares available, like birch baskets and wooden kitchen utensils. Helsinki-based fashion label R/H offers a cool, laidback womenswear collection which combines nordic minimalism, colorful prints and feminine cuts with fine materials such as silk and bamboo jersey. R/H shop sells also the popular Karhu Originals trainers. I call it the best kept design secret in town! Artek 2nd Cycle is kind of hidden in a basement floor of a jugend building, although just a few steps away from the main shopping streets. The 600+ sq meter store focusses on 2nd cycle and vintage products from such classic designers as Alvar Aalto, Ilmari Tapiovaara, Yrjö Kukkapuro, Arne Jacobsen, and Charles and Ray Eames. Pieni Roobertinkatu 4-6, 00130 Helsinki Open Wed-Fri 11-18, Sat11-15 Johanna Gullichsen Textile Craft & Design offers an extensive range of woven textiles for modern living.

The key elements are simple, bold patterns, natural materials and down-to-earth sensibility. Selection includes rugs, cushion covers, kitchen textiles, bags, blankets etc. A while back, the company collaborated with the cool Helsinki-based headwear brand Costo and created a limited edition collection of hats and bow ties available in a variety of Johanna Gullichsen signature fabrics! Open Mon-Fri 11-18, Sat 11-15 I can never pass by this charming little shop without taking a look at its latest selection! Papershop carries a of variety of printed paper sheets, cards, note books and an assortment of home decorations made of paper. They also have a printing studio in the premises. There’s just something about a handwritten note and a greeting card that an e-mail or a text can never replace! Open Mon-Fri 10-18, Sat 11-16 Lokal is a concept store in the heart of Helsinki, and a home to independent Finnish art, design and craft. The little, well-curated space combines a gallery, shop and a cafe, and it’s one of my favorite places to stop by when in need of a quiet moment with a cup of good coffee in beautiful surroundings.

Their themed exhibitions change every month and the current one WOOD presents a selection of wooden products, artefacts and vintage items. Annankatu 19, 00120 Helsinki Open Tue-Fri 12-18, Sat 12-16 Made in Kallio is not only a design shop, but also a cafe and a work space for local designers, artists and craftspeople. The atmosphere here is always creative and you will most likely end up hanging out in the shop longer than you intended, having a chat over a cup of coffee with some of the artists or other customers! Happens to me e-v-e-r-y time. The cafe serves specialty coffees, delicious cakes and pastries as well as healthy smoothies. Reason enough to swing by Kallio! Vaasankatu 14, 00500 Helsinki Open Mon-Fri 11-18, Sat 11-17 Looking for a vintage dress to wear for a special occasion or just a pretty outfit for a summer day? Frida Marina is my go-to store whenever in need of a stunning piece of vintage clothing! Besides clothes, their selection includes bags, shoes, jewellery, home accessories, tableware and lots of other old and new treasures.

Here the odds of bumping into a 60s vintage Marimekko or Vuokko dress are usually high! At Fargo Vintage, you have a constant feeling of the possibility of bumping into a rare piece of collectible just any minute, whether it’d be a tulip chair by Eero Saarinen, pieces of furniture by Alvar Aalto or a rare vinyl from the 70s! Olo-huone second hand & lifestyle Olo-huone focusses on second hand furniture and interior design items, but they also have a vast selection of handicrafts, clothes, jewellery, books and cards available. The shop displays both vintage items and items made out of recycled materials, as well as fun ideas how to re-use old items. Alongside shopping, you can also enjoy a tasty cup of coffee by Johan & Nyström!
