Sun P , Jun 20, 2009; I am looking to setup a small studion (not commercial) in my house to take portraits.

I have found a good collapsible stand set, however, i am not sure about the backdrop. 1. Vinyl- This is 1mm thick and is actually vinyl flooring and is not really glossy but does have relection problem, but the opposite side is like rubbersish and totally matt. The problem is its ridiculously heavy. 2. PAper- Best option, but just too expensive this part of the world. I know its very cheap in the US/UK etc. 3. Cloth-wrinkle free - affordable. However, I am a lot concerned about the quality of the portraits. I am looking for that pro level protraits where the backgrounds look matte smooth. But since I have no experience I am not sure if cloth can do what paper can do. Or is it more a matter of technique? Would moving the subject a couple of feet away help with the cloth background or it would still not look anywere close to what paper/vinyl would look? My working area is 7 feet by 17 feet.(yes its small) and i have 2 elincrom 200w/s stobes. Matt Laur , Jun 20, 2009;

Controlling depth of field will have a lot to do with this. If you choose the distances between you, your subject, and the background well, and use a lens that can nicely capture the subject while throwing the background well out of focus ... that makes many of the textural differences on the backgroumd material less important.You mentioned movint the subject "a couple of feet" away from the backdrop. You need more than that, really. What lens(es) are you working with? And as for those two strobes: what look are you after? Will you be using both on the subject, or are you intending to light the backdrop, as well? Hi Matt, Thanks for the prompt response. Well for now I am using the kit 18-55 at mostly 45-50mm. And yes, I will be using the two lights in different settings, wherein I use one light on the background and one atr 45 degrees from top to the left/right. Sometimes I use only one light and sometimes both without lighting the background. So in general playing around.

I do have a beige wall against which I try all this but that wall, has lots of lights and switches etc whcih I then need to remove in PP. So in order to avoid that I am looking for a backdrop. I have already tried with the current one where in I have managed to get high key(with some PP in Photoshop), then moving the subject away from the background about 4-5 feet and use one or two strobes on the subject, which makes the wall a little greying(monochrome image) and then use the max sync shutter speed to get a full black low key image. But now i also take portraists of friends etc, so was looking out for a not very expensive option(collapsible) but I love the background matt-ish effect that wall/paper gives, and was wondering if cloth/muslin give those effects. I somehow just hate that clth hanging in the background even without wrinkles but somehow gives a very not so good(my opinion) effect. For now although experts have advised for a lot of options here, I think I can just about to get my hands on a nikon 50mm 1.4 AF-s here.

I will have to wait for someone to come from the US/other counrtries to get some other lenses. Do you think that would be good enough? SunilMark Chartrand , Jun 20, 2009; I have seen many people talk about using a Nikon 50mm 1.4 for portraits. Yes, it is a sharp, fast lens, but it certainly would not be my first choice for a portrait lens. You have flashes, so I am going to assume you are thinking of the f-1.4 because of its narrow depth of field. If you move in very close for a portrait, you will have a very narrow depth of field! Do you really want only the eyes in critical focus while with everything else not very sharp? Remember, with a 50 mm you have to be quite close to your subject for a head and shoulder's portrait. I have found that I use an f-1.4 opening only when the light is dim and I have no other choice. Even then, unless you are doing full figure or couples, I would be careful of so narrow a depth of field. MarkSun P , Jun 22, 2009; NOt really using it just at 1.4.

But currently my kit lens I use at about f8/11 and it is quite slow. I like the image sharpness, but they are not as sharp as the pro level lenses. So I was wondering if the 50 mm at 2.8/ or 4 would provide good Bokeh to blur the background even inside the studio. Unfortunately I have a very limited range to chose from this part of the world and we dont have the leisure of trying out rented lenses or return etc the prices are very high and I can't really afford to make a mistake, so I am taking my own sweet time. The only thing is that, I am very happy with the progress I am making specially since this had started out as a hobby and now is a very serious aspect. I have decided to buy few but buy the best. I know its not the lenses/camera but the person behind, but considering the costs involved, its better to be safe and get the better ones by paying more than being sorry. Here, mostly stuff I get is from gray market without warranty so would have to get it from US. SunilNotso Bad , Jun 22, 2009;
