All school rules apply to all dances, here on campus, or any field dances. Prom night is one of the most memorable parts of high school for many people. But between a dress or tuxedo and dinner, it can quickly become unaffordable for some families. That’s why, for the last four years, Project Prom has been helping Anchorage-area high school students get everything they need for the big night completely free of charge. “This was just a way that we can give back. We know what it’s like to not be able to afford to go to prom,” said June Gardner, who founded the organization with her sister, Jamie. They receive dresses and other items from donors year-round, but most of them are collected during their donation drive about a month before prom season begins.

About 50 students came to the Marriott Hotel near Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport Saturday to get a complete look for prom. “I think it’s pretty cool,” said Eagle River High School junior Lauryn Mulkey. “Sometimes, people are struggling with their money and need help getting things. So to be able to come here and pick out free things is pretty nice.” She picked out a midnight-blue dress, along with a black pair of heels and a necklace. “I can’t wait to see her on the night she gets her hair done and all that. I think she’s going to look spectacular,” said her grandmother, Debbie Cherod. In addition to dresses, shoes and jewelry for girls, Project Prom also supplied tuxedos and shoes for boys. That allowed Ian Armstrong and his date and childhood friend, Ashley Watson, to match their outfits. “This is really phenomenal. I’m really happy and excited about this,” Ashley said. With the help of a stylist, Ashley selected a black dress with teal accents and a matching hairpiece.

One of the things that makes this dance different and unique from other proms is the high standards at which those in attendance agree to abide. This formal event requires participants to adopt the dress and behavior guidelines from the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet (a standards guide for all Youth of our Church, given to us by our Prophet).This means all in attendance must: Dress modestly and respectfully (See Dress Code section) Abstain from any alcohol or drugsUse clean languageDance respectfully and appropriatelyUnfortunately, those who do not adhere to the guidelines will be turned away at the door or asked to leave. Dress CodeAll who wish to attend should avoid extremes in clothing, appearance, and hairstyle. You should look modest and respectful. This is a formal event. In other words, T-shirts, jeans, and tennis shoes won't work. Here are the expectations: YOUNG WOMENYoung women should wear a formal or semi-formal dress of modest length that covers the shoulder and is not low-cut in the front or the back or revealing in any other manner.

Here are some suggestions as you plan for a wonderful evening: Swap or borrow – Do you have a nice dress, but you wore it last year? Trade dresses with a friend or ask around in your Ward or Stake.Sew What? – Sew yourself a beautiful dress or find someone who can help. Consider paying or trading (babysitting?) for sewing services. It may be easier and faster than shopping at local stores for a modest dress! Get a Facelift...for your dress! – Add a colored sash, jacket, or shrug. This is also a good option if you find a dress without sleeves. Just make sure your shoulders and back are covered and that you keep the jacket on. Scarves, drapes, or shawls are not an adequate cover. Check online – Buy a dress from an online store specializing in modest clothing.

Remember that even a modest-styled dress can be immodest if it fits too tightly, shows cleavage, is too short, or is stretched so your shoulders aren't covered. A Few Tips (Especially for guests) – Our standards are high because you are a daughter of God! We want to see you looking modest and beautiful at the Prom. This will be a clean, wholesome, wonderful night–an evening to remember! YOUNG MENYoung men should dress in formal wear. Tuxedos are welcome but not required. Come in a dress-shirt and dress-pants with a tie. Suit coats are also a nice way to look dressed up. You should also maintain modesty in your appearance. So which will you wear? A tuxedo, or suit and tie? Either way, you will look marvelous! You likely have a suit already. If not, ask around! Borrow one form a friend or family member who has your same build. You can also look at a local thrift shop for something reasonable to purchase. You may find a tuxedo! If you choose to rent a tuxedo, check online to purchase a used tux online.

Often, used tuxedos are cheaper than the cost of rental, and they sometimes even come with shoes, vests, ties, and even cufflinks. If you are not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints please tell us who you will be attending with: Glen Echo Park We are very fortunate to hold our Mormon Prom at the Historic Glen Echo Park. Glen Echo Park was the DC area's premier amusement park in the early to mid 1900s.  Now owned by the National Park Service it serves as an art, cultural and community site. The Art Deco buildings and designs take us back to a simpler time.  The dance will be held in the Bumper Car Pavilion and the historic Dentzel Carousel will be open for the youth to ride that night.  DirectionsFrom the Capital Beltway (Interstate 495), take exit 40 on the outer loop or exit 41 east on the inner loop. Take Clara Barton/Cabin John Parkway to the MacArthur Boulevard/Glen Echo exit.

Make a left onto MacArthur Boulevard. Cross Goldsboro Road and then make a left onto Oxford Road where you will see the Park's main parking lot.From downtown Washington, take Massachusetts Avenue in the northwest direction, to its end at Goldsboro Road. Turn left, and continue to MacArthur Boulevard. Turn right on MacArthur Boulevard and take an immediate left onto Oxford Road where you will see the Park's main parking lot.Parking   A free parking lot for Glen Echo Park is located just off MacArthur Boulevard on Oxford Road, across from the Glen Echo Shopping Center.   This parking lot is for those who are attending the dance.  If you are a parent or leader driving youth to the dance, please drop off from the upper parking lot.  Drop off Parents, please do not park in either of the Venue parking-lots.  The main parking area is for those attending the dance and the drop-off area parking-lot is only for Glen Echo Staff.Continue on MacArthur Boulevard and keep right through the round-about and stay right.
