Wooden countertops & farmhouse sink for outdoor kitchenHope you’re all having a lovely week! Our countdown to summer holidays is still on around here! I know many of you are already on holidays and yes, I envy your routine-less, lazy, go-to-the-beach-whenever-you-want days! We’ll be there soon, though! Somehow, I found the time in this crazy busy month of June to do a double post today!!! Earlier this morning I shared our weekly link up party… if you’re a blogger, I’d be thrilled if you popped over and linked up what you’ve been up to! Or if you’re one of my readers (that I appreciate very much!!) check it out for tons of pretty inspiration and delicious recipe ideas! When Virginia of Fynes Designs shared this Trash to Treasure Blog Hop she was doing, I immediately jumped on board! I love saving something that’s headed to the dump and make it into something pretty!
However, my June has had two unexpected weekends away and now I’m not sharing what I had originally planned. However, I’ll just share a smaller project with you today that started out with wood headed to the garbage and made into this… Last summer we did some big renos on our deck… including the addition of a roof and maintenance free rails. When the contractor asked if he could have our old falling apart rails, I immediately answered no. I was thinking that maybe we’d have a use for them two or three or ten years down the road. You just never know. So when we were redoing our bathroom last month and I wanted to make a towel rack, I immediately knew where to go for wood. Nope, not to Home Depot this time! Here’s how I made it… All you need is a piece of fence board (or pallet wood or any other reclaimed wood), some hooks and paint or stain of your choice. Our deck boards are all cedar so the first thing I did was sand down the board using a hand sander.
That thing is soo handy and gets the job done so much faster. I washed it down to get rid of all the saw dust and let it dry thoughly. I hadn’t planned on using chalkpaint, otherwise I wouldn’t have had to sand it down. I gave it two coats of Simplicity from Country Chic. This chalkpaint is pretty much the best… super easy to use, odorless, dries quickly and it comes in a fabulous selection of beautiful colors! You’ll have to check out their site! I then measured and using a screw driver, I attached these beautiful hooks from D. Lawless Hardware. These hooks are so sturdy and come in an oil rubbed bronze color. I love how it brings out the same color in our countertops and tile! They’re currently on sale on their website if you’re interested. (And, no I’m not paid to say how much I love the chalkpaint and this hardware…. they’re just products I love and want to share with you, my readers!) I absolutely love how totally functional this towel rack is. It gets used every single day by our little ones!
