Adopting from rescue organizations is critical to finding homes for dogs and cats in need. Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue where animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes. Foster families get to know the dogs and cats in their care and learn important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require.

This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters! Every animal in Pet Haven’s adoption program is examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated, treated for any known medical ailments, implanted with a microchip ID, and spayed or neutered. We provide a 10-day health guarantee for each adopted animal. Within the first 10 days of adoption, if you or your vet discover a medical condition that existed prior to adoption, we will work with our vet partner to provide medical attention at no charge to you. We receive many of our animals from rural rescue groups in Minnesota and Iowa, as well as local animal control facilities. The rescues we partner with are in areas that have more animals in need than potential adopters. Here in the Twin Cities, we have a larger population with many potential adoptive families for animals in need. Pet Haven accepts Pet Haven “returns.” While Pet Haven works very hard to place cats and dogs in their forever homes, we know that circumstances sometimes require people to make the difficult choice to surrender their pet.

Any animal adopted from Pet Haven is welcomed back into our care should the need arise. The animal returns to foster care until their new forever home is found. Because we are committed to providing post-adoption services, an animal’s new home must be within reach of our volunteers and veterinary clinics. Given this, Pet Haven limits its animal placements to locations within 60 miles of the Twin Cities. Our post-adoption services include our health guarantee and behavior counseling.
