Nothing compares with the excitement of a new puppy in the house! It is the beginning of a very special relationship, and raising a puppy is one of the most rewarding aspects of pet ownership. Puppies, however, require much more attention than adult dogs. Puppies who do not receive proper training, exercise and attention can become frustrated and develop behavior issues. Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation strives to place puppies in homes where their unique needs will be met and where they can enjoy a life-long commitment from their adoptive family. For this reason, the foundation has the following guidelines specific to puppies in addition to our dog adoption guidelines. Puppies under the age of 4 months may not be left alone for more than 4 consecutive hours without being taken out for a potty break and playtime. If your work schedule does not permit this, options such as a midday dogwalker or doggie daycare do exist. Please research the options and have a plan in place prior to interviewing to adopt a puppy.

Although at 6 months a puppy should be physically capable of holding its bladder for 6-8 hours, many puppies of this age still require an exercise break in the middle of the day. LDCRF does not place young puppies in homes with children under the age of three. Puppies and children can easily overwhelm one another and it has been our experience that most families find it too much to manage. We may occasionally make exceptions for experienced dog owners, but the exception must be pre-approved through a consultation with our puppy coordinators. if you would like to discuss the possibility. Crate training is the preferred method for housetraining and keeping the puppy (as well as your belongings) safe  when supervision is not possible. All members of the household who will be involved in taking care of the puppy should attend the adoption interview. LDCRF does not allow adoption of two puppies from the same litter to the same adopter. LDCRF does not adopt puppies out of the Washington DC/Metro area.
