713 posts, read 2,311,488 times I love the outdoors and am planning on moving here when Im out of school. If there is a job market for Veterinary Technicians. My question is, can you own a fox as a pet here in Montana? I love animals and love exotics as well, fox being my favorite. So far I found no state law or regulation that forbids them, just wanting to know from those living in the state if its ok. I currently live down here in Texas and sadly you can't own a fox as a pet tho its alright to own a wolf for some reason. Fox = small, wolf = big... 18,697 posts, read 29,617,896 times Just a quick search turned up this first link. In the writeup it references the second link. 87-5-705. Regulation of exotic wildlife. They don't housebreak, they don't train well, and they mark like a tomcat (and smell almost as bad).
If you really gotta have one, I'd suggest seeing if you could get one from the Russian silver fox project, which spent 20 generations breeding them for tameness, and finally got foxes that act like dogs -- at least in their response to people. They did not attempt to breed for any other traits, only tameness. (Be sure to view the video of the fox that was from their other line, which was bred for aggression. That only took 5 generations to achieve, if I recall right.) Wolves are not generally great pets either (they don't train well) but they're closer to a domestic dog than a fox is. Coyotes actually work out better as pets, but most coyotes DO have ancestral dog DNA (per studies done a while back), probably from the southwestern Indian dogs of 2000 years ago. We spent 10,000 years breeding the wild-animal traits out of our domestic animals, for the very good reason that wild animals don't suit civilized life. They're not adapted to it (which is stressful for the animal) and consequently they're NEVER completely safe to have in a domestic household.

He told me his fox does well even tho it lives indoors all the time because he has not build a shelter for him yet outside. Also I won't be keeping my fox in a cage rather I plan to have a 300 SQ.Ft. encloser outside that connects to my house with a door added so he can go inside to a room made just for him if he wants. This idea to own a fox did not come about rather I did over 1 and a half years of reasearch and found that if you don't kn ow what your doing then owning a fox is a big no no.
But if you have the time and patience to work with him then everything turns out ok. (For the most part :P) Sybil's Message Board <- site where breeders/owners of exotics talk. Sometimes I come across as angry, unhappy and a mean old man. These are just a few of the things I've been called over the phone. Most of the time when the phone rings I am in the pasture feeding horses, cows, camels or doing chores. I am 59 years old now and was raised on a farm. As a kid I had pet fox, skunks, raccoons, cows, hunting dogs, and horses. Since then I have raised many different types of critters. River Otters, Mountain Lions, Mini Zebu cattle, Chipmunks and Bobcats, to name just a few.
I am NO expert on animals. The definition of an expert, is a man 20 miles from home. Animals surprise me all the time. They teach me all the time. I have had fox of some kind, since I was 12 years old. Had a pair of River Otters live in my home for several months. Raised river otters for many years. All I can tell people is what works for me. It may not be right for you or your critter. But it works here. The reason for this boring paragraph is coming. Some of the comments I hear from a few folks bother me. Some folks claim their critter was not like the critter they raised a few years ago. The last critter I had loved everyone, this one only likes me. The last one litter box trained easy, this one has accidents. The last pet I had was not shy, this one is timid. So it was either not bottle fed soon enough, not played with enough by the breeder or at least it has got to be someone elses fault, because I play with it just like the last one. Animals are like people. They have their own individual personality.
Raise a few kids. They usually are not the same. Get married a few times. Take river otters, most of them are great pets for a couple of years. I think it is Puberty. When they are about two years old, they remind me of a teenage kid that thinks mom and dad are stupid. Most kids grow out of this. Some river otters grew out of this, some did not. No two fox are alike. No two camels are alike. They all have traits that are similar, but they are different. Take horses, we love to work with horses. Love to trail ride. If you buy 8-10 horses at a young age, raise them up to be 3 year olds and start breaking them. Will they all turn out the same. NO. A couple will be tame enough for kids. Some will make good riding horses for an adult. And 1 or 2 might need to be a pasture horse, nice to look at, but do not go near them. If the latter were a person they would be in jail or prison. I am trying to get you to understand that sometimes you can do everthing right, and it does not work out. Sometimes in people, sometimes in animals.
Just never give up. And yes keep calling and I will help you any way I can. Every day I receive some emails that I do not answer. These emails ask multiple questions. I type with one finger. It would take me hours to answer some of your many questions. The same with texts. Keep questions to yes and no answers. Or write out your questions and call me. All lengthy emails and texts I delete. The gray fox and the skunk make the best (wild)house pets. I had a gray fox (Teddy) in my home for 2 or 3 years. He would steal anything small, car keys, silverware, TV remote, and about anything small. He hid all his treasures under my son's bed. If we could not find something we took a flashlight and crawled under my son's bed, and looked through Ted's treasures. He would lay on our lap while we watched TV. He was easy to litter train.
