Press the tip to scratch paper and pump the pen until the ink is flowing. Draw out a couple lines to get rid of any excess paint. When ready, apply your pen to your napkin rings and paint on whatever you heart desires.
PRO TIP: To avoid smudges and finger prints, hold your napkin rings from the inside by pressing two fingers outward against the inside of the ring. Once they're all painted, set them aside to dry for about 10-15 minutes, depending on the thickness of your application. 2. Trim Your Agate With your napkin rings drying, continue the madness by trimming your agate with gold, too. Hold your agate parallel to the ground and make sure your paint pen isn't too runny or it will drip down onto the flat surface of your stones. If it does, however, don't fret -- simply wipe it up right away with a slightly damp towel. If it doesn't all come off, you can gently buff it off with a dry paper towel once everything is dry. Due to the unique nature of agate, some edges might be rougher than others. For edges with lots of nooks and crannies, use the corners and edge of your paint pen to get inside. Set aside to dry for 10-15 minutes. 3. Glue & Secure Line up your agate on your napkin ring to determine the place and direction your want it to sit.
Lay your agate on a flat surface, backside facing up. A) Squeeze a small amount of glue onto your napkin ring where the agate will touch, then B) quickly flip it over onto the back side of your agate. Let your napkin ring sit atop your agate for 10-15 minutes to allow the glue to set.Slice carefully to create several napkin rings from one cardboard tube. Instead of tossing them in the recycle bin, upcycle cardboard toilet paper tubes into glittery napkin rings for everyday use or for a special occasion. Paints, fabric and glitter offer ways to pretty up the plain cardboard, completely transforming its appearance. Cut the tubes to the desired thickness using a craft knife to poke a hole; then use scissors to cut around the cardboard if you wish to make two or more napkin rings out of one cardboard tube. Festive Fabrics Cover the cut cardboard tubes with a deeply colored fabric that has silver, gold or glittery swirls or patterns upon it. Trim the fabric so you have enough to overlap around the tube and to tuck in at each end.
Use a craft glue suitable for both fabric and paper to secure the fabric in place. Dress the fabric up even more with gold or silver ribbon, tying a bow around each finished napkin holder. If desired, add a small charm such as an inexpensive heart pendant to thin pieces of ribbon as extra adornment. Metallic Paints Paint the cardboard tubes any color you like, suited to a theme, such as red for a Christmas gathering. Paint metallic gold stripes, swirls or stars over the red paint to give it a look reminiscent of a Christmas ornament. Create sets of rings in gold, silver or copper for a matching shiny set. Embellish the edges with bits of thin metallic ribbon or rickrack. Poke two holes near one end to push through a thin piece of craft wire with a shiny glass bead or two attached, pushing the wire flat inside so it doesn't get in the way of the napkin. All That Glitters For a sparkle treatment even young children can assemble, pour one color of glitter in a shallow tray or lid large enough to accommodate a cardboard tube cut to size.
Coat the outside of the tube with school glue using a foam brush; then roll the tube through the glitter several times to coat it. Set the tube upright to dry. For another look, apply the glue in stripes or swirls, then sprinkle the glitter over it to give the napkin ring a subtle sparkle treatment. then add glitter designs, for yet another look. Some craft paint-makers sell paint with glitter already embedded in the liquid. The Rhinestone Touch Apply stick-on craft rhinestones over the entire outside surface of each napkin ring for a festive effect. Create a set of four or six rings, each a different color, so guests can choose their favorites. Use shaped rhinestones, such as snowflakes, to create a design in the center of a napkin ring; then surround it with smaller rhinestones to complete the look. Paint a tube in a metallic or bright color, and dress it up with stripes of stick-on rhinestones, allowing the paint to show through between the stripes.
