March 10, 2014   Subscribe I'm planning to get some cheap/free used furniture from family/friends, thrift stores and maybe craiglist. I don't know anyone who's strong enough to carry it up to a second story apartment (no elevator). How do I find someone to do this that isn't a full-service moving company? It sounds like you’re looking for a moving labor service or helpers, and although I cannot give you an exact quote personally; I have information that can help you get what you need.
There are plenty of moving labor services that offer this type of help, and generally charge by the hour per mover. To give you an idea, these services can range anywhere from $80-$200 per hour depending on how many movers are involved. The benefit of hiring moving labor is that it can save you money since you won't be hiring full service movers for just this one item. It will also save you the backbreaking task of lifting your heavy armoire and potentially injuring yourself. These movers are specially trained, so you can worry less about your item getting damaged because you couldn't see around the corner of the hallway, for example. Once you receive your free estimates (we recommend at least three), you will want to have detailed conversations with any moving labor service you are thinking of hiring. Be sure to mention your two flights of stairs, and any details about the layout of your home, as some services charge extra for moving heavy items up and down stairs. Thanks again for your question, and best of luck with moving your armoire!

Answered 1 year ago For the plant moving issue - and think in advance about clearance in doorways - both sideways, and if pot needs to be moved tipped for overhead clearance if a tree:1) borrow, or rent a heavy duty 4-wheeled garden cart (or if not over about 100 pounds a kid's little red wagon if you have one) at a tool rental place for probably $10-15 a day2) impose on a few neighbors, if enough people to carry it safely without taking out their backs could hold onto it without dropping it3) handyman (or handymen) though you will be paying probably a minimum 1 hour fee4) rent or borrow a handtruck and firmly rope or bungie cord the pot to the handtruck platform (with 1/2" or thicker plywood piece under if needed for center support of the pot), and buy or borrow plywood or board scraps to handle porch stairs or back door entry stoop - assuming this is not going upstairs. If going upstairs then you probably need an appliance moving handtruck - larger fold-out platform, skid rails on the back to pull it up carpeted stairs, and built-in straps to bind it on with (though they may mounted too high to hold a pot - may need ropes or nylon binder straps).
Probably want 1 or 2 friends helping with this to prevent tipping sideways.5) if really big, like a tree in bigger than about 30 inch pot, then Moving (Search the List category) - for normal household movers; or possibly a local plant center or greenhouse - especially one that delivers shrubs and trees, or one who picks up plants at homes for winter storage space at their greenhouse. They commonly have special round clamp- wheeled carriers to handle large pots/planters.6) if not unduly heavy, using ramps as necessary and enough friends/neighbors to control it and keep it from tipping over, tow it in using a plastic kid's sled with strong ropes through several tow holes - just be sure to put throw rugs or such under it when moving over any flooring other than carpet, to avoid scratching.7) if not oversized for this or too tall, use a large size contractor wheelbarrow with a couple of friends or neighbors to steady it, and boards as needed to get over doorsills and up porch steps.8) Search the List under Hauling - for trash hauling companies, who haul away old appliances, furniture, trash - they mostly work with 2 man crews for larger items
, who could carry it or hand truck it in for you if two men could handle it (maybe with your help steadying it, if you are physically able).9) Riskier from a liability standpoint if they get injured, but if not over about 70# per person pay a couple or few strong decent neighbor teenagers $5 or 10 apiece to carry it in for you, if clearances are such they are not likely to tear up your doorways and walls.10) Pull out your communicator and have Scotty beam it in for you11) Take a high res photo, download to your computer, and have a virtual indoor plant - OK enough of this foolishness, it is becoming clear it is past midnight - Goodnight, Gracie. need to move very large, heavy desk about 2 feet at my house in vero beach, fl. Answered 6 months ago Guest_99465682Did you actually mean 2 feet or movement ? Just get a friend or such to help - lift one corner at a time and slip a folded up washrag or bathmat or such under each foot and then slide it, if on hard floor. If on carpet, ditto except use cardboard or a heavy piece of plastic like a partly cut out drink bottle or such, bent up or taped on the "forward" side of the feet so the feet do not slide off it, and slide it.
