Wooden shutters complement to your house’s exterior siding and give definition to windows. While some shutters are purely decorative, others open and close to protect the windows. Since wooden shutters are a big investment in your home, it only makes sense to keep them in good repair. Removing the shutters from the house and setting them on a flat surface makes repairs easier. Broken Louver Pins Wooden shutters may have louver pins that hold the shutters to the frame. When one of these plastic pins wears out or snaps out of position, that louver may fall out of the shutter’s frame. Pull the louver with the damaged pin out of the shutter with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Insert the larger end of a new pin into the hole. You might need to drill the hole slightly larger if the new pin isn’t the same size as the old one. Depress the spring-loaded narrow head of both louver pins as you set the louver back into place in the frame. Release the ends of the pins once you align the pin heads with the holes in the louver frame.

Broken Louvers If the damage isn’t too severe to a broken louver, you can sand off the paint and apply wood filler to repair the damaged area. Once the filler dries, sand the louver and paint it again before reinstalling the louver into the shutter. If the louver shows signs of wood rot, you’re better off replacing it. Most shutters have replacement louvers available. Wood Rot on Frame Don't discard shutters that have wood rot. You can repair a small section of wood rot on the frame by chipping out any of the soft, damaged wood with a screwdriver tip. Mix two-part auto-body filler following manufacturer’s directions in a small container. Spread the filler into the damaged area, smoothing the surface with a putty knife. Once the filler dries, you can touch up the paint on the shutter to cover the filler. Shutter Frame Repair A shutter with a loose connection to the house can wiggle back and forth. This puts stress on the outside wood frame of the shutter. Weather conditions and poorly painted shutters can also contribute to the need to repair the frame.

When the mortise-and-tenon joints that hold the frame together become loose, some or all of the lovers can fall from the frame. Make repairs to the frame by cleaning it first with a stiff brush.
