When you buy new mirrored closet doors, the rollers at the bottom move effortlessly across the track.

Give those closet doors a couple of years, however, and you might start to run into problems. The rollers may stick, the door may jump off the track or the doors don't roll at all. With a few simple repairs and regular maintenance, the rollers will easily be back in working condition. Check the lower track for impediments that cause the rollers to get held up. Remove any debris that has gotten stuck in the channel. Clean the track with an all-purpose cleaner and vacuum any leftover debris. Look at both the upper and lower tracks. If one of them is bent, the rollers won't move correctly. Straighten the track, using pliers. If that doesn't work, lay a piece of wood in the lower track or hold one in the upper track next to the metal and gently pound against the outside, using a hammer. Be careful not to swing the hammer near the mirror. Gently roll the door. Look at the screws holding the track in place. If one of the screws is loose, that will keep the door from rolling. Tighten the screws, if necessary.

Look at the door from the front and check the gaps on the bottom and top. The gaps should be uniform and the doors should hang in a level position. If the doors are lopsided, the rollers won't glide properly. Locate the adjusting screws along the edge of the bottom door. Turn the screw counterclockwise if the side of the door with the screw is higher. Turn the screw clockwise if the side with the screw is too low. If you can't get to the screw because the door is very low, pry the door up with a knife to raise it while you adjust the screw. Enlist the help of an assistant, if necessary. Check the rollers on the top and bottom of the door to determine if the wheels are damaged or worn. Grasp the door with both hands and lift upward. Pull the bottom of the door toward you and take it off of the track. Remove the rollers with a screwdriver. Take the damaged piece to the hardware store to buy a replacement. Give your mirrored doors regular maintenance to avoid future problems. Clean dust from the rollers and the tracks, using a vacuum.
