Dedon was founded in 1990 by a German soccer pro turned entrepreneur, and its high-tech synthetic fibers are woven into furniture by skilled rattan artisans on the island of Cebu in the Philippines. Recent years have seen the event expand and evolve, welcoming internationally acclaimed celebrities and guests of honor. Returning Friday, November 13, to the Fashion Industry Gallery in the Dallas Arts District, 2015’s Night of Stars promises continued elevation of this anticipated event. Announced earlier this summer, renowned New York-based fashion designer Prabal Gurung is set to receive this year’s Night of Stars Career Achievement in Fashion Award. Today, Patron Magazine is honored to reveal David Sutherland as Fashion Group International of Dallas’ 2015 Career Achievement in Interior Design honoree. President and CEO of David Sutherland Inc., and owner of Sutherland furniture and Perennials fabrics, David Sutherland’s pioneering career in design spans four decades. The Dallas native started with a single fine furnishings showroom, later pinpointing a vacancy in the industry for beautiful outdoor furniture and fashionable fabrics for outdoor spaces. “I conceived of the outdoors as a place to be, a place to contemplate and celebrate architecture and nature,” Sutherland has described of this revelation.

“In order to execute a vision I had for this certain space, it was necessary to reinvent the concept of comfort in the outdoors.” His reinvention sparked an industry-wide shift. Launching in 1994 in collaboration with designer John Hutton, the Sutherland brand has become synonymous with luxury outdoor furniture. Current collections feature “livable art” by the world’s most celebrated designers, including Hutton (pictured above), Philippe Starck, John Dickinson (pictured below), and more. Concurrent with the growth of Sutherland’s outdoor brand, his David Sutherland Showrooms group also continued to expand. Thereafter, a third launch would compliment both successful ventures. Again honing in on an unrecognized need in fine décor, 1997 brought the launch of Perennials. Teaming close to home with wife Ann Sutherland, now President of Perennials, Sutherland introduced a line of technologically advanced, fashion-forward outdoor fabrics. Looking ahead, the company’s largest growth is occurring beyond patios and decks.

Indeed, innovative fabrics, rugs, and carpeting by Sutherland’s Perennials can be found both outdoors and inside the country’s most beautiful homes. To date, the Sutherland name can be found on some 30 branded collections in nearly 40 international showrooms, and Perennials has become the touchstone in its category. Sutherland has also received awards from the Robb Report and ADEX, among others. Speaking exclusively with Patron Magazine, a humble Sutherland expressed gratitude – and a bit of surprise – following the announcement of his upcoming award from Fashion Group International of Dallas. “It’s nice to have an industry that you love so much make a recognition such as this,” he said, adding that he was “taken aback” upon hearing the news. As a credit to our fair city, Sutherland also made clear that “being in Dallas has contributed to a great deal of our success.” Sutherland will be recognized, in advance of the upcoming Night of Stars gala, at a special event tonight at Rolls-Royce Motorcars of Dallas.
