Light Bulb Socket With Clip

Broken lamp sockets can be easily replaced. Grounding an electrical wiring refers to attaching a bare or green insulated wire to a screw or clip in a lamp. The grounding wire ensures that no stray electricity leaves the wire and enters metal parts of the lamp, which can cause physical injury if someone touches it. Lamp sockets that are grounded use three-wire cords and a three-pronged electrical plug. Remove the light bulb and lamp shade. Remove the lamp shade harp. Remove the top half of the lamp socket cover by either pressing your thumb on the area marked "press" or inserting a flat-blade screwdriver into the slot on the side and prying it off. Remove the socket insulation cover. Pull the socket base up out of the base cover. If it won't pull off easily, you might need to loosen the set-screw on the base cover to get it out. Loosen the terminal screws on the socket base and unhook the wires. If the green insulated or bare copper grounding wire is in a clip on the socket base instead of a green grounding screw, insert a flat blade screwdriver into the clip slot and push out the wire.

Cut off the plug end of the lamp's old three-wire electrical cord with wire cutters. Untie the underwriter's knot that the wire attached to the terminal screws was tied in. Pull the old cord out of the lamp from the bottom of the lamp base. Insert the end of the new three-wire cord plug into the base of the lamp. Thread the cord up through the lamp base. Strip 3/8 inch of the insulation jacket off the wires of the cord with wire strippers. Cut the wires at their intersection point with a utility knife and pull them apart by 2 inches. Tie the black and white wires, or the two black wires, at the end of the cord into an underwriter's knot. Hold the wire with the ends facing up. Pass the end of the left wire down behind the cord and hold it on the other side. Pass the end of the right wire under the left wire end and over the front of the cord. Insert the right wire end into the loop made by the left wire. Pull the wire ends to form a pretzel-shaped underwriter's knot. Inspect the three wires at the end of the cord.

You will have a hot wire, a neutral wire and a grounding wire. The grounding wire might have a green insulation jacket or be a bare copper wire. The hot wire will be black, the white neutral. If they aren't color coded, the neutral wire insulation jacket will have a ridged or ribbed surface or a white stripe on it, and the hot wire insulation jacket will have a smooth surface. Wrap the end of the hot wire counterclockwise around the brass-colored screw on the new lamp socket. Wrap the end of the neutral wire counterclockwise around the silver screw and tighten it with a screwdriver. Wrap the green insulated grounding wire or the bare copper wire end counterclockwise around the green grounding screw on the lamp socket and tighten the screw. For lamp sockets with grounding clips, insert the end of the bare copper wire or the green insulated grounding wire into the grounding clip. Screw in a light bulb. Plug in the lamp cord and test the bulb to ensure that it works. Attach the lamp harp and lamp shade.
