We have Montrealers and Torontonians but Halifaxians just doesn’t sound quite right. That's because people who are native to Halifax are actually called Haligonians. There are a lot of myths that surround the history of the word, including a story about a buried priest’s head, but in all reality it was a term that was borrowed from the city's namesake the Earl of Halifax of England. Either way, Haligonians are proud of their city and its unique history, so it is an honor to be considered one.

Boasting a population of just over 400,000 people, Halifax is the largest city in Canada east of Quebec. The Maritime provinces are the smallest, geographically speaking, in the country so Halifax’s rather large population makes it the bustling hub of the Atlantic. With much of Atlantic Canada depending on seasonal agricultural economies, such as fishing and potato farming, Halifax plays a crucial role in connecting the Maritimes with the rest of the country due to its large size and even larger port. We love Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, but in all honesty they are some of the most expensive cities in Canada. And seeing as how we want you all to feel confident calling any place in Canada home, it is sort of our duty to tell you that Halifax kicks those other cities’ butts in the affordability scale. The average cost of rent ranges from $527 for a studio and up to $1700 for a 3+ bedroom home. In comparison to Canada’s Pacific, is the Atlantic actually the better coast?

Continuing on the same vein of affordability, the cost of purchasing a home is one of the lowest in the entire country. The average price of a house is about $300,000, making those homeownership dreams come true for many people. Halifax is a beautiful coastal city, and these prices are for homes in the city! No suburb hunting here to make ends meet. Like any city, certain industries are more vital to the local economy than others. In Halifax, many wages are lower for those in IT or Telecommunications compared to larger economic hubs such as Toronto.
