DuChâteau® hardwood flooring is available in two primary grades to create smooth, modern floors as in our Select Grade woods, or a more antiqued, old-world floor as seen in our Aged Character woods.Our select grade wood keeps to a smooth, even modern surface without all the distressing typically associated with our aged character grade wood. thus, enhancing the wood’s organic contours.When smoking a floor, the tannins in the wood reacts to the burn, thereby giving the floor a darker, grey; exactly how deep a color is desired determines the duration of this treatment. Since not every piece of wood in a floor will contain the same amount of tannins, one section could appear darker than others. The result is an authentic, rustic floor with greater color variation.For a  floor with extra accentuation, we wire-brush our floors. Brushing removes the soft wood from the floor and further brings out its texture. This makes the floor even more durable and impact resistant. Any minor scratches and “imperfections” over the years as a result become less apparent and give way to that unique and characteristic appearance for which many of customers yearn.To further simulate the extremes of nature, we utilize a process known as carbonization, which is a process that exposes the wood to extreme heat and freezing temperatures.

These fluctuations strengthened the wood, while brilliantly aging its appearance. What makes DuChâteau Floors so unique is the inherent variation in the wood. Variation refers to the color gradients that naturally occur in wood. Did you know that an oak tree takes hundreds of years of growth before it can be lumbered, processed and milled to produce a solid wood floor among other things, and yet other fast-growing trees, like spruce, pine, fir, birch or poplar need only decades. Current consumption trends, however, do not lend themselves to such long periods of growth; thus, we cannot rely so heavily on these slow growth species. At DuChâteau Floors, we believe in eliminating the traditional waste associated with solid wood floor production of slow growth species, while still finding a way to showcase their incredible beauty. To do this, we use a mixture of woods to create a much more advanced flooring option – the engineered floor. Unlike a solid wood floor, an engineered (multi-ply) floor consists of at least two types of different wood products adhered together. This means that the top layer (what you see when installed) can be a highly desired species of wood, like oak, while the bottom substrate layer (what you don’t see when installed) can be those fast-growing tree species.

Manufacturing floors in this way allows us to more sustainably harvest trees and produce more high quality floors with the same robust and luxurious feeling of solid wood flooring within the thickness of that top layer.
