FE2: mine sound kind of tinny, but I never thought they had too much slap. FA: Very quiet, and I don't feel the camera vibrate much. F100: Very quiet, and seemingly little or no mirror slap. F3: Loud, and I can feel a shock wave going through the camera when I fire it. Seemingly has high slap; Anyone have some objective data? And what about other models, like FM, FM2, etc? Which manual focus Nikon do you think has the lowest slap? What about the AF models? Objective data counts, and your opinions count double . . . David Bebbington , Dec 03, 2011; Slap/operating noise is to certain degree inversely dependent on original purchase price (pro model better than amateur) and very dependent on age/condition.
If you have an F3 which is loud and vibrates heavily, the first thing to do is look at the rubber cushion at the front edge of the focusing screen - this should be 3 - 4 mm thick and feel dry - if it is thinner and/or gooey, it needs replacing - a common requirement and not expensive.ross b , Dec 03, 2011; I have a F100 and it's very light. Some people worry abou t it lacking mirror lock up but I have found it's not needed. Rodeo Joe , Dec 03, 2011; Firstly, ignore the noise the camera makes, it's totally irrelevent to the amount of vibration produced. I don't think any of the Nikons you mention suffer from "mirror slap" to a noticeable degree. IME most of the vibration actually comes from the shutter and not the mirror. I did extensive testing on the result of mirror-up versus no MU, and came to the conclusion that provided the tripod was up to the job, then MU had almost no effect on image sharpness. What did affect the amount of vibration was the weight of the camera body and the orientation of the shutter.
Heavy camera bodies and horizontally-running shutters clearly showed less vibration than lighter bodies and vertical shutters. That's partly why my favourite 35mm film camera became the F2, and I imagine the F3 is very similar. I could never fully tame the vibration of my FE or FM bodies, and so shied away from anything with a vertical shutter for quite a while. The situation changed with the introduction of AF bodies. At this point I believe that Nikon completely redesigned the shutter and mirror mechanism, making their vertical-running shutters a lot less prone to vibration. The F801-s is a fairly vibration free camera, as is the F4 - it's just a pity that in other respects the F4 is more useful as a doorstop than a camera!Christoph Sensen , Dec 03, 2011; The F6 is probably the one with the lowest mirror slap. The noisiest that I have is the EL, followed by the F3, followed by the FE2. The FG and the FM3a are not bad. ChristophDavid L , Dec 03, 2011; The FE2 and FM2N have a counterbalance on the mirror that dampens shock.
That is one of the improvements over the FM, FM2 1/200 sync, and FE cameras. The last sentence of the Features section notes this. /wiki/Nikon_FE2Bruce Rubenstein , Dec 03, 2011; For older cameras the most important thing is the condition of the foam bumper strip that the mirror strikes when it goes up. There isn't much relevance to saying model XYZ is sort of loud if the one you have has a foam strip that turned to dust or goo in the last century. Anyone who thinks that mirror slap is no longer a factor should take some actual pictures with a camera where the mirror can be locked up. With my D7000, with a 180/2.8, mounted on a tripod shot at 1/30 sec., using the ML-3L remote release there is a very significant difference in blur with the mirror locked up. Then Bruce, you need a better tripod.John Williamson , Dec 03, 2011; If the camera is the SOURCE of the vibration, how does a better tripod stop that ? I can understand how the better ones hold it steady in a position or keep wind or other external vibrations from getting at the camera.
