Garage Floor Paint And Sealer

/services/floor-coating on this server.Epoxy paints protect the surface of the cement from staining and chipping. There’s no need to remove old paint off a cement floor before painting with epoxy paints. This makes painting the floor considerably less troublesome and safer than painting bare cement. Instead of using acid to etch the surface, you’ll only have to sand lightly. Epoxy paints are more durable than typical concrete paints and offer a level of sheen that other paints cannot. Epoxy paints consist of a two-part application system followed up by a sealing topcoat to ensure the long life of your new color coloring. Tape a piece of plastic sheeting to the floor. Cover all edges of the sheeting sealing it to the floor so no air can get under the sheeting. Leave the sheeting in place for 24 hours. Lift the sheeting and check to see if any moisture is on the underside. Dry sheeting indicates the epoxy paint will bond to the floor properly. Cover the surrounding surfaces including walls, cabinets and baseboards.
Move all obstacles from the room. Cover vents and electrical outlets. Scuff the paint with sandpaper just enough to degloss it. Use 80-grit sandpaper on a floor sander to complete the job quickly. Wipe over the surface with a tack rag to lift all the dust. Wipe down the plastic sheeting along the perimeter of the floor so no dust filters down to the floor during painting. Mop the surface with a stiff bristle broom and an all-purpose cleaner. Use the brush to scrub lightly, especially over any stained areas or greasy patches. Rinse the floor with clear water until no cleaning residue remains. Leave the floor to dry for at least 4 hours. Ventilate the area by opening all windows and doors. Where limited ventilation is available, situate a fan at the end of the room opposite the window or door and turn it onto a medium setting to help push fumes out of the room. Put on a pair of protective gloves, eyewear and rubber boots. Shut off any gas or electric heating appliances in the room. Stir the epoxy paint until all the ingredients are well mixed.
Pour the smaller can of hardener into the epoxy paint, scraping the inside to ensure you get all of it out of the can. Stir the two together until well mixed and then put the lid back on the can. Fit a liner into a paint tray. Fill the paint tray to the fill line with the epoxy paint. Brush the coating around the perimeter of the floor with a 3-inch wide paintbrush. Spread the paint evenly, brushing over any thick patches until the paint is smooth and thinned out. Add an extension pole to your floor roller. Roll the paint over the floor in straight lines, starting at the corner of the room farthest from the door. First roll across the room lengthwise, then crosswise, in small sections, working your way toward the door. Apply a second coat after drying the floor for 24 hours. Mix the topcoat and hardener, stirring until thoroughly blended. Place the lid back on the can and wait 30 minutes for the chemical reaction to take place. Open the lid and stir the topcoat again. Pour into your paint tray, fitted with a new liner.
Apply the top coat using the same painting techniques as you did with the paint. Wait 24 hours before walking on the floor. For garages, wait at least 72 hours before parking your car on the newly painted surface.
