Joseph Bograd was two days old when his father and uncle moved their growing furniture business into a larger building on Main Street in Paterson 61 years ago. Over the years, Bograd's grew in prestige and became a landmark in the old industrial city's landscape. It was the kind of store that might sell its best dining set for $20,000 or a crotch-mahogany railroad-baron bed for $8,000.

Unlike three dozen other furniture stores that did not survive here, Bograd's stuck it out with Paterson through the Great Depression, the shift of the middle class to the suburbs, the rise of the shopping centers that sapped Paterson's strength as a regional retailing center, the riots, the low points for the economy and the vagaries of retailing. But now after 40 years in the business, Mr. Bograd says it is time to change his life. And that involves moving his store to the outer suburbs and keeping only a warehouse in downtown Paterson. He says his decision has less to do with Paterson's problems than with the availability of a building near Exit 53 of Interstate 287 in the Morris County hamlet of Riverdale, within walking distance of his home. "The building was tailor-made for our business at our stage of life," said Mr. Bograd. But while Bograd's move by itself will not have a lasting impact on the city's economy, people here say that in terms of symbols and perception, it is a serious blow.

"Regardless of what spin you want to put on it, they will be missed," said Mayor William J. Pascrell Jr., who was counting on Bograd's to be the anchor for development of a hotel, a movie theater and retail stores nearby." Deborah Hoffman, executive director of the Paterson Economic Development Corporation, an agency that supports businesses, called Mr. Bograd's plans "very disappointing," adding, "He's very much an institution in the city of Paterson." Still, she played down the impact of the move on other retailers. His customers never spent time in neighboring stores, she said, and people looking for discount furniture have other choices in Paterson. "Main Street is a strong street," she said, "And I think it will remain so." Vincent Cortese, president of the Paterson Chamber of Commerce, said that although other major Paterson stores, like the Jacobs Department Store and Meyer Brothers, were no longer in business, smaller new stores have helped Paterson's economy.

Bograd's was started in 1930 by Mr. Bograd's father, Samuel, and uncle, David, who immigrated from Belarus, which was part of the Soviet Union in the early 1920's. On Aug. 1, 1935, two days after Joseph was born, the brothers moved from a store on Market Street to its present site, a four-story building at 288 Main Street. In 1948, the store expanded into a one-story building behind one that had been the Paterson Opera house, and in 1980 moved to a six-story building next door, giving Bograd's 104,000 square feet in which to offer one of the largest selections of high-quality furniture in the country. But in January 1995, Mr. Bograd, who lives in Pompton Lakes, was about to get on the new stretch of Interstate 287, when he saw that a former bus garage was for sale. The building, 38,000 square feet, was within sight of a major highway, guaranteeing a drop-in trade he never saw in Paterson. None of his children is interested in continuing the business when he and his wife, Marcia, retire.

Their son, Louis, is a banker; another son, Mark, is a museum curator, and their daughter, Stephanie, is a banker. And since the stock market crash of 1987, the quality furniture business has been struggling, he said, with many stores going under. Although Bograd's is respected in the industry, he wonders whether a buyer would be interested in "104,000 square feet, with all the inventory that we have, located in downtown Paterson," he said, adding, "Any one of those three factors would be enough to create questions in a potential buyer's mind." Susan Greenbaum, operations manager for Greenbaum Interiors of Paterson and Morristown, the only other higher-quality furniture store in Paterson and one that also specializes in custom manufacturing, said she understood Mr. Bograd's decision. "In this business," she said, "it's efficiency or die." But his departure may hurt the image of Paterson, whose major problem, she said, continues to be the perception that it is a decaying, dangerous place -- a theory with which she disagrees.
