Free spay and neuter services for pets are possible The Athens Area Rescue Foundation (AARF) has partnered with the Atlanta Humane Society’s mobile spay/neuter clinic to help provide free spay/neuter services to the Athens area on Dec. 7 and 8. Although most of the appointments have filled up already, Michelle Rabold, outreach coordinator for Athens Canine Rescue, a member of AARF, still wants to get the word out to let the public know that services such as these can be provided to the community. “The main goal is not to advertise for people to sign up, although I’m one-hundred percent fine with people contacting me, but to let the community know that the individual rescue groups (in Athens) are working together to end (pet) overpopulation,” Rabold said. The Atlanta Humane Society’s mobile spay/neuter clinic can travel to almost any county in Georgia and provide free spay/neuter services due to a grant it has received.

The main reason AARF called the Atlanta Humane Society was for help with the pet overpopulation problem in Athens-Clarke County. “Unfortunately it is out of control, which leads to many cats and dogs being euthanized each year,” Rabold said. Appointment times are filling up, but people still can call Rabold and be put on a waiting list if there are no longer spaces available for the clinic on Dec. 7 and 8. Organizations and groups involved in the event are Athens Canine Rescue, Helping Paws Rescue (a division of Pawtropolis), Athens Area Humane Society, Athens-Clarke County Animal Control and PAWS. “I want people to be aware of this program in case somebody would like to help fund another event similar to this one in the future,” Rabold said.
