In an interview yesterday at the palatial Gold Coast store, CEO Gary Friedman described this new wave of outlets as pushing boundaries in order to abandon archaic, soulless retail and "show some empathy for humanity." The Chicago location "is the most controversial and ambitious project we've ever undertaken," he said. "A lot of people thought we were crazy."The decisions that raised eyebrows were manifold. Friedman, for one, said no to about 10 other sites in the area that were closer to traditional retail corridors, including the old Cedar Hotel near Rush and Oak streets. As he tells the story, in 2011, a young guy on his real estate team mentioned the Three Arts Building, knowing Friedman's obsession with beautiful architecture. Everyone else laughed, because the building wasn't zoned for retail, had been empty since 2003 and needed significant repairs.But an hour before Friedman's plane was about to take off to go back home to California, he decided to swing by the building at 1300 N. Dearborn.

"I immediately said, 'I think this is it,' " he remembered. "The building was a mess, but I still had goosebumps."The interior courtyard reminded him of the one at Hotel Costes in Paris, near the Jardin des Tuileries, where he had recently enjoyed a stay and many meals with his daughter. He wanted to re-create the experience of casual but luxurious dining at his stores, and the courtyard's combination of the indoors and outdoors was perfect. On a larger level, Friedman said, he didn't want the project to feel like a store but a home and an inspiration. Customers can buy smaller items, like faux-fur throws, blankets and candles, on-site, but they won't walk out with major furniture purchases. "There are so many lines we're trying to blur: indoor and outdoor, home, retail and hospitality," he said. (Friedman actually wanted to include a small hotel in the space but backtracked when he found out it would tack two more years on to the project. He's bringing the hotel idea to New York, instead.)

The extravagant space features living room vignettes on the first floor, along with the Three Arts Club Cafe with its glass-and-steel skylight, a stage for musical performances, a wine vault and a separate, more casual boulangerie where customers can drop in during the day to grab fresh-squeezed juices, doughnuts and bread. Restaurateur Brendan Sodikoff, the man behind Doughnut Vault, Au Cheval and Bavette's Bar & Boeuf, among others, created the food. Friedman met Sodikoff through Thomas Keller, the famed chef for whom Sodikoff once worked."Thomas is a friend of mine, and I asked his opinion," Friedman said. "He doesn't often give glowing reviews, but he said (of Sodikoff), 'He's the real deal.' Brendan is a unique thinker. We really hit it off."The second floor houses bed and bath showrooms, as well as a new design atelier where interior design professionals can pore over swatches galore.The third floor is home to Restoration Hardware's children's furnishings and its new teen line, while the fourth is a museum-like space with modern art on the walls.
