When these people had serious complications, some even dying after the weight loss surgery, the patients or their family members could not get answers from Weight Loss Agents or the doctor.The company’s own online commercial on their website couldn’t make what they do any more clear -- you call them and then they book your weight loss surgery in another country.
Team 10 found more than a dozen people who have undergone the weight loss surgery and have ‘new lives’, just like the commercial says -- but nothing like they ever imagined.Kaycha Baez’s story started with a call to Weight Loss Agents.“There is a hole in my stomach; I couldn't eat or drink anything,” Baez said.Baez had her surgery in June of 2015.“I was in the hospital for about a month, it's been tough, I wouldn't wish this on anybody,” she said.Baez said the Weight Loss Agents’ operator told her not to worry. The surgeon they were sending her to in Tijuana was Dr. Mario Almanza.Weight Loss Agents operators claim over the phone that Dr. Almanza has an excellent track record and zero deaths.An operator told Team 10 over the phone during our first investigation into Dr. Almanza that he "never lost a patient".RELATED: Team 10: Dozens injured during weight loss surgery in MexicoBut Team 10 has confirmed through death certificates or their families that three people have died after having weight loss surgery done by Dr. Almanza.Charles Ezell died in February 2014.His family said it was shortly after the weight loss surgery."
I just miss my best friend," said son Brandon Ezell.Annettee Coronado Garcia’s family said she died after surgery in March of the same year.Gloria Lynn Triguero’s death certificate lists complications from surgery for her cause of death. Her family said she also died after weight loss surgery by Dr. Almanza.The Weight Loss Agents website has thousands of testimonials from people who say they've had a successful surgery.Team 10 was contacted by patients who say their horror stories need to be heard.“I was on my death bed,” said Steve Kaiser.Kaiser talked to Team 10 from Chicago.He went to Almanza for a gastric sleeve -- an operation that makes your stomach smaller so you eat less and lose weight.Kaiser said Almanza made the opening to his stomach too thin, making it nearly impossible for him to eat or drink.“The Weight Loss Agents know that -- they know what's going on,” Kaiser said.Sheri Sullivan also talked to Team 10 from Helena, Montana."I thought I was making an educated decision," said Sullivan.Sullivan had to have her stomach removed after her surgery.“
My organs were shutting down -- 45 Cat scans, 40 surgeries,” said Sullivan.Diana Thomas in Carlsbad, New Mexico told Team 10 she has nearly $500,000 in medical debt after complications from her weight loss surgery by Dr. Mario Almanza."I was 61 years old and I don't want to die before my mother did," said Thomas.They all said Weight Loss Agents was quick to take their money, but when they started having problems the company stopped returning their calls.“They won't call me back; I haven't heard from them since,” said Baez.“I'm amazed there have only been three confirmed deaths,” said Heather Ferguson.Heather Ferguson and Melissa Henson both worked with Weight Loss Agents in different capacities.Ferguson was a coordinator for the agency for two years while Henson worked directly for Dr. Almanza and along side Weight Loss Agents for four years.“They're ultimately sending people into their demise for money,” said Henson.Henson currently works for another weight loss facility in Tijuana, Mexico.Ferguson said at first she genuinely enjoyed her job as a patient care coordinator.“
I was 19 at the time. I was on the phone talking about surgery. It was a script, I helped write the script,” Ferguson said.Ferguson said working there was a high pressure sales environment.“Whoever could book the most patients. I booked 20 patients in one day one time,” said Ferguson. Owner Jarred Cohen said he would do an on-camera interview with our Scripps sister station in West Palm Beach Florida, then sent an email saying he changed his mind.He did send this statement in part by email: “We continue to facilitate bariatric surgeries for our customers with Dr. Almanza (among others) because our customers have experienced an extraordinary degree of success and satisfaction with the surgeries that Dr. Almanza has performed.”"When contacted by a customer with post-surgical complications, we remind the customer that we are not a provider. We urge the patient to contact the provider, or in an urgent situation, to contact emergency medical authorities to receive immediate and prompt medical care."
Cohen's response to allegations that Weight Loss Agents puts profits before patient safety: "We are not aware of any current or former employees who have ever made such an assertion. Such an assertion would be completely groundless as it would obviously be extraordinarily detrimental to our business if we did not facilitate on behalf of our clients with providers who provide safe and effective treatment.""If for no other reason than for business interests, it should be obvious that the receipt of safe and effective treatment is the paramount goal of ours for our customers. Absent the satisfaction of this paramount goal, we would have no business." “They are making so much money off of it, but can't even compensate a family that's dealing with $80,000 in medical issues,” said Ferguson.Patients want Almanza to be stopped and for Weight Loss Agents to stop misleading patients about his track record.Dr. Mario Almanza's brother and administrator, Hugo Almanza Reyes, told Team 10 through email during our first investigation:And as I said it before in most of the case the negative effects are due to noncompliance with the
If the patient has severe pain, vomiting, persistent diarrhea, nausea and others, generally is because they do not respect the diet. It is critical to successful treatment [to] follow these guidelines. He did not respond to our request to this follow-up story.Team 10 has been in contact with the Mexican government since our first investigation.The Ministry of Tourism told Team 10 a formal complaint has been filed against the hospital where San Diego woman Angie Stidum went for weight loss surgery in March--she's been in a coma ever since. An investigation into Green and Health Hospital is now underway. Dr. Mario Almanza is a surgeon at Green and Health Hospital but he did not do Stidum's surgery.Stidum did not book her surgery through Weight Loss Agents.The Ministry of Tourism sent Team 10 this statement: "A formal complaint regarding the matters of your July 2015 news story was received by the Baja California Medical Arbitration Office on Monday, July 20 at 3:15pm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only complaint that has been filed on this matter.
The complaint initiated a formal investigation, which is in progress and is being led by the Arbitration Office." "A committee comprised of doctors has been assembled to analyze available records and procedures. If medical negligence is found, all evidence is turned over to the police who will determine whether charger will be filed. While the investigation is still in its initial stages, given the nature of the complaint the committee will work swiftly and be in touch with the person who filed the complaint.""The Baja California Medical Arbitration Office is where all medical complaints need to be filed for investigation. To help facilitate complaints from American Citizens specifically about the doctor and medical facility in question, a special protocol was set up with the Mexican Consulate in San Diego. To our knowledge past clients have been directed to contact the Consulate in person or over the phone." "The health and safety of visitors to Baja California is our highest priority;
