Car Seat Protective Covers for Hot Summer Days! by Team Babyville in TUTORIALS : PROJECTS car, polyurethane laminate, pul, summer, waterproof fabric

The steamy days of summer mean wet bathing suits, damp exercise apparel and sunscreen covered bodies. When traveling home from the park, lake, pool or gym, why not protect your car seats and console armrest with washable, water-resistant Babyville Boutique® covers. Adding an easy-to-make terrycloth cover with PUL lining will protect the car seat leather or fabric from the discoloring properties of lotions, oils and moisture as well as add comfort from sun-drenched car seats. A console cover is the perfect way to prevent staining from oily hands and arms. Armrest Console CoverTo make your armrest console cover, measure the top length starting at the front edge and continuing to back hinge. Next measure the width of the console top at its widest point. Making the cover for the top only will allow you to still open and close it as needed. Using the measurements above, cut a rectangle of Babyville PUL fabric. Round the corners by placing a cup or glass at each corner, trace and cut.

Measure around the perimeter of the PUL rectangle and add 1ʺ. Cut a piece of Babyville Fold Over Elastic (FOE) to this measurement. To add a stretchy FOE edge, start on one long side and encase the raw edge of the PUL with the elastic. Use a zigzag stitch and stitch around, slightly stretching the elastic as you stitch to create a secure fit around the console top. Stitch slowly around curved corners and make sure the elastic has enough stretch in this area.Where elastic ends meet, overlap about 1ʺ, trim excess FOE, then continue stitching. Use a narrow zigzag, stitch along FOE raw edge to finish. Seat CoverTo make your seat cover, measure back width of seat and then measure the length from top of seat back to bottom of seat back. If you wish to cover the seat bottom as we did, continue measuring the length to the front edge of the seat. From these measurements, cut one rectangle of Babyville PUL for the lining and one rectangle of terrycloth fabric for the cover, adding 1ʺ all around for seam allowance.

Measure the seat on each side of the headrest, and mark these measurements on the terrycloth fabric. To make ties for the cover, cut four 14ʺ lengths of ribbons. Pin two each of ribbon pieces to right side of terry fabric at markings with raw edges of ribbon even with raw edge of fabric. Baste or tape in place.Pin PUL fabric and terry fabric, right side together. Stitch around using a 1/2ʺ seam allowance, leaving an unstitched 4ʺ opening along one side for turning.Trim seams and corners. Turn to right side through opening. Fold opening seam allowance to inside, then topstitch around cover, making sure to stitch opening closed. With a little time and effort, your new covers will keep you from the summertime “sticking” to the seat while also adding some protection to your car’s interior. Now to keep this car-themed momentum going, Babyville has some other easy projects for you to sew - a car seat cover for pets and an organizer for the kids’ travel toys.Enjoy your summertime activities and have fun sewing Babyville Boutique projects!
