Rightly or wrongly these terms tend to get used interchangeably on their own when describing any window blind made with a semi-transparent fabric as well as together as 'sheer and voile' to describe a general category to include all types of blinds made with semi-transparent fabrics. We will continue to do the same here so please forgive us if we are not being entirely correct, but we feel it will make things a bit simpler when looking for a window covering of this type if you don't get too hung up on the terminology. However of interest to you might be just to say that the term 'voile' originates in France where it is the word for a veil, and we can imagine how this term has evolved to become a common term for the type of fabric often used for wedding veils.

If you are looking for a voile or sheer roller blind then you are probably looking for a blind that is semi-transparent and will allow you to look out and see the view through a window whilst providing privacy from the gaze of those outside - similar to traditional net curtains. Remember, as with net or lace curtains these benefits will only be there during daylight hours, and once the lighting inside a room is lighter than the level of light outside, the visibility will reverse so that you will be on view to anyone passing by the window whilst you will only be able to make out shadows and shapes of what is outside. For this reason sheer roller blinds are most often used in combination with other window coverings, which can be drawn at night to provide privacy. Heavier curtains have always been used in combination with net curtains, and similarly curtains are an option to use with sheer window blinds. However there is also an option to use a second blind in combination with a voile roller blind as brackets are available now that allow two blinds to be fitted on the same window close to each other in the same plane.

On this type of installation each blind can be used independently of each other or together. For example a ground floor bedroom could have a combination of a voile blind to be used in the daytime and a blackout roller blind which can be used at night. If you are looking for a window blind to provide privacy but also protect from solar glare then also look at screen fabrics. These tend to get used more in commercial environments as they are more effective at solar control. Another reason to use a sheer or voile blind is to provide an aesthetic effect using the light through a window. Coloured fabrics, such as black or red, would tint the daylight as it passes into the room, and a patterned blind would provide a creative effect of leaves, stripes, geometric shapes or whatever the pattern may be. Sheer or voile roller blinds in more neutral colours such as white or cream can also be used to soften the look of an ugly window or to soften the angles of a window, if that is desired to be more fitting to your room scheme.
