Modern vinyl floors resemble wood, ceramic tiles and even natural stone. Even though you can select a high-gloss vinyl floor covering, with time, the floor loses its wet look. Or, maybe the vinyl flooring in your house came with a low-gloss or matte finish that you want to punch up. Some vinyl floor manufacturers recommend specific products to clean and maintain your floor's finish, but product labels can tell you whether a certain solution works for your type of floor covering. With just a little bit of time and work, you can restore a vinyl floor's finish to make it look new again and protect it from damage. Product Choices Before applying any product to your vinyl floor, verify that it can be used on vinyl. To create a high-gloss sheen, select an acrylic product that contains polyurethane or the type of commercial product that's used in hospitals, stores or office buildings. Commercial products provide greater protection and last longer than a lot of retail products, but most of them cost more and come in larger containers than retail products.
Clean It Up The first step to getting that high-gloss sheen begins with thoroughly cleaning the floor. The floor requires a thorough cleaning before applying the high-gloss coat; otherwise, dirt and debris may embed in the finish. A dust mop, broom and dust pan or a vacuum cleaner removes the dust and debris. Run a light wet mop over the surface to get rid of spills and stains; for ground-in dirt, use a soft-bristle brush. Avoid abrasives or products that can scratch the surface of the vinyl. Remove Old Finish After cleaning the floor, remove the old finish, using a stripping product designed specifically for your floor. Check the flooring manufacturer's recommended strippers. A cotton mop is the easiest way to apply the stripper across the vinyl floor in an even, but thin coat. Let the stripper sit the recommended time, which, in some cases, is only 5 to 10 minutes. For tough finishes, scrub the floor with a rotary scrubber fitted with stripping pads. Remove the sludge material that results from the emulsification, then rinse with clean water.
Allow the floor to dry. Apply New Finish When the old finish is gone, apply the new finish using a sponge mop. Work from one side of the room to the other, applying it in light, but even strokes. Hunting Blinds For Sale In CanadaKeep the room at 65 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 48 hours to ensure the product dries and cures. Custom Air Cleaner Wing NutsApply a second coat, if desired, after the floor is dry to the touch, after about one hour. Special Considerations Some vinyl manufacturers advise you not to use mop-and-shine products, as they can leave a filmy residue on the surface of the floor.
A woven rug without dyes or a vinyl-backed rug strategically placed near the entrance to the room can help keep dirt from getting tracked onto your high-gloss vinyl floor.
