After an eight-year hiatus Big Wreck scored two hit albums — 2012's "Albatross" and last year's "Ghosts."
So the fact that Thornley recently released a solo album called "Secrets" may come as a bit of a surprise to Big Wreck fans. Don't worry, it doesn't mean Big Wreck has been put back into the closet. It just means Thornley had some things to get off his chest and he had some time to do it. "There was a bit of a lull in touring while "Ghosts" was doing its thing and it's been an idea of mine to do something like an acoustic record for years," explains Thornley on the phone from his Toronto home. It wasn't something he felt entirely comfortable with. He'd always been a rocker, writing songs for a band. He wasn't confident his voice, guitar and lyrics were strong enough to hold up an entire album. Yet from time to time, he'd get these Bruce Cockburn-like urges. "The idea of rock and roll guys doing acoustic albums doesn't sit well with me," Thornley says. "It usually sounds like a rock and roll guy doing an acoustic album." A few years ago, Thornley was working on some acoustic numbers with his old friend, Hamilton native Colin Cripps, currently lead guitarist for Blue Rodeo.
Cripps suggested he turn to producer and recording engineer Mark Howard to get the sound he was looking for, a mix of acoustic and rock. Howard had cut his teeth in the '80s at Hamilton's Grant Avenue Studio and then went on with its founder, Daniel Lanois, to work with some of the biggest names in the business — Peter Gabriel, Bob Dylan, U2, Willie Nelson, Tom Waits and Neil Young. Thornley and Howard finally got together this spring, holing up in a cottage near Halliburton for 12 days with a pile of recording equipment, as well as Big Wreck bassist David McMillan, a Hamilton resident, and Blue Rodeo drummer Glenn Milchem. Over the next couple of weeks, they recorded the 13 tracks that now make up "Secrets." "We were immersed in it," Thornley says about the cottage sessions. "There weren't a lot of distractions. We talked about the music when he got up over coffee and again at the dinner table." Although, he released two records under the name "Thornley" during the Big Wreck hiatus, Thornley describes "Secrets" as his debut solo album.
The "Thornley" records were hard-driving rock band albums, he says. "Secrets" is different, he says. He's put it out under the name "Ian Fletcher Thornley" to emphasize the fact. "Secrets" certainly is a departure in sound for Thornley. There are a few all-acoustic singer-songwriter tracks, but for the most part, the album is a mix of acoustic and rock, with good helping of psychedelic effects thrown in by Howard. The sound is a return to that gold age of the early '70s when bands routinely mixed acoustic sounds with rock. Thornley says the sound is a true reflection of his influences, obtained by going through the record collections of his parents, both of whom were raised in Hamilton. "My father was playing Bruce Springsteen and my mother was playing Bruce Cockburn, Cat Stevens, even Supertramp," says Thornley. "It all kind of gets in there, I guess. I love that stuff. I don't think it's been beat, both sonically and in the honesty of it." Thornley is currently touring "Secrets," with Milchem and McMillan backing him and Howard on the sound board.
The tour comes to the Molson Canadian Studio at Hamilton Place Tuesday, Dec. 15. Meanwhile, Thornley and his Big Wreck partner Brian Doherty have already started working on the followup for "Ghosts." Thornley says the two have found a formula that seems to be working. "We came to the realization that we should be trying to please ourselves rather than please some suit at a desk who knows more about numbers than he does about sounds," he says about his Big Wreck work with Doherty. "For some reason when we make music that resonates with us first, it seems to resonate more with the public. I'm very proud of both 'Albatross' and 'Ghosts.'"
