A towel rack, sometimes called a towel bar, is an important accessory for a bathroom, providing space for towels to hang neatly before and after use. While guidelines suggest a basic height range for a bathroom towel rack, the height varies based on the number of racks installed, the height of a nearby cabinet or vanity, or even the average height of people using towels in the bathroom. Height Range The National Kitchen and Bath Association recommends towel bars hung between 30 and 48 inches off the floor.

If only one towel bar is used and is in line with a vanity, for instance, aligning it at the same height as the vanity is one option. A 30-inch towel bar may suit young guests or family members, while 48 inches near the maximum comfort level for an average adult's reach. Multiple racks fit within the span of this range. Variables If hanging a towel rack along a wall just behind a bathtub, the rack may be slightly higher than 48 inches and within reach for an adult standing in the tub or sitting on the side of the tub. This also helps keep the ends of the towel out of the way for a reclining bather. A rack for hand towels may be even higher for a towel that hangs above a countertop, so the towel doesn't touch the counter. For a towel bar near a children's sink, placement below 30 inches is an option, especially if the adjacent sink basin is also low. How to Install a Bathroom Towel Rack A bathroom towel rack can be both functional and stylish, with finishes to match your existing bathroom fixtures.

Tire Air Valve Replacement CostHold the bath fixture rack up to the wall and center it. Make a mark at each end. Use a stud finder to check for studs at each mark. Use your level to make sure the marks are even. Loosely attach one side. Attach one mounting plate to the wall, but don't tighten the screw all the way.

If there is a stud present at one of the marks, screw the mounting plate directly into the stud. If there is no stud, use your power drill to screw in a metal toggle anchor until its head is flush with the wall. Attach the mounting bracket by turning the screw directly into the anchor.Slide one side of the towel bar onto the installed mounting plate and check that the other mark is at the correct distance. Install the other mounting plate, using a toggle anchor if necessary. Do not tighten the screw all the way.Place the towel rack over the mounting plates and make sure it's level. You can adjust the mounting plates up or down by hand because you haven't tightened the screws yet. When you're finished leveling, remove the towel rack and tighten the screws in the mounting plates.Reattach the towel bar to the mounting plates. Use an allen key -- usually included with the towel rack kit -- to tighten the tiny screws on the underside of the towel rack ends. Tighten until the towel rack is secure.

While the standard towel bar height is 48 inches from the floor, or 36 inches in a children's bathroom, it's more practical to install your towel rack at the height that best suits your bathroom. Place the towel rack within easy reach of the shower or bathtub.
